Gáspár SZŐKE: The Roman Connection

on Wednesday, 8th of May, 2024 at 6 p.m. at INDA Project Room

Opening speech: Dominika Trapp

Gáspár Szőke's research and observations during his scholarship in Rome in 2021 serve as the starting point for his exhibition entitled The Roman Connection in the Inda Gallery’s project room. In the works created at that time, he took elements of Italian built spaces, windows, mosaic shapes, building ornaments and other repetitive forms out of their original visual context to abstract them in the plane and space of his images, and connect them there with other shapes, including classical patterns from other contexts, to visualize and explore their possible meanings.

Szőke's permanent sensory, emotional, analytical and interpretive relationship with the visual elements of his here-and-now environment informs his playful, organically changing language as well as the field of visuality he defined for himself at the beginning of his practice, namely, abstract art, whose traditions he is in a ceaseless dialogue with. His position in this dialogue is not without elements that can be perceived as critical. Alongside the works he made in Rome, the other pictures exhibited here represent new chapters in his artistic evolution, in the experimentation where he attributes meaning, constructs and interprets visual signs. As he declares, one of the ‘outcomes’ of observing folk motifs in Barcelona’s ethnographic museum, the Museu Etnologic I De Cultures Del Mon during his short study trip in 2023 is that in several of the picture we in this exhibition, he steps out of the plane and towards objectivity.

On view: May 9 – June 19, 2024
