VIENNAFAIR 2014 — „We Own This Shit" Project of KAMEN STOYANOV for Viennafair - Reflections

2 - 5 October 2014, Messewien, Vienna

The INDA Gallery will participate, for the fifth time this year, in VIENNAFAIR, the greatest international contemporary art fair in Central Europe, that has been attracting participants from an extending circle of artists, and offering high-quality organization and a wide variety of programs for the visitors.

The project incorporates four separate pieces, in the topic of Movement and Space.

The title “We own this shit” is based on a discarded piece of paper with the same handwritten text. The artist found the piece of paper in the lookout cabin of a parking lot in Beverly Hills.

Kamen Stoyanov first re-created the text as a neon sign, then used it in an action infront of an new shoping mall building that was on sale before it opened. He exhibits the neon piece and photographies of the action. In this piece the artist carried around a message in the form of the neon sign, as a messenger, in different cities and different contexts.

The second work is called "a circle more than" is also a neon piece, which glows in a round, wooden space, that can be accessed through a door. The red neon letters were placed on the wall one by one, and they make up a text through the movement of the viewer. The concentric movement and the thinking transports the text that becomes immediate perception. The viewers revolve round their own axes and only this way can they understand the text – circle more than circle more than circle more than... constant motion. The viewers create the text through their own motion, and ultimately they finish it too. Circular space is antithetical to the usual tetragonal shape of exhibition rooms, and this circle represents an imaginary and quiescent space.

A wooden self-made football table entitled „Learning from Angel“ is situated under the glowing neon work "a circle more than". In the popular game the movements of the human body are going trought the static figurs to the ball. The figurs in the Stoyanovs object can be seen as a methapor for the audiance - active as well as passive. The artist was inspired for the creation of this object by a man with a roma origin from a small village on the bulgarian-turkish border. His name is Angel. He built for his grandchildren a small feriss wheel and a football table. Kamen Stoyanov went to visit him and to learn how to built such a table from a garbage. He filmed on video his plaing grandchildren and the other kids around. Kamen Stoyanov built his table in a more minimal way as it purpose is to be shown in exhibitions.

The third piece is called “Future Idea”, it is a video documentation of a flying action, and represents the temporary installation that was organized near the airport of Sofia. A flying human in flex wing with motor is pulling a banner with an arrow on it over the city of Sofia. During the two-hour long action, the arrow above the city alluded to the election that was to take place two days later, and the longing for a change.

The artist also installed a fluorescent light with an arrow near the airport, by an unfinished bridge construction, and used car batteries to light it up. This arrow pointed to the sky and the terminal at the same time.
